Horses have unique characteristics endowed by God, and in the presence of a nurturing mentor relying on the Holy Spirit for direction, a session with a horse can be used by God to meet the needs of an individual. For example:
- Horses have a high density of mirror-neurons, so they can reflect back to a hurting person exactly what they are feeling instead of letting them “pretend” and “hide” behind their emotions. A trained facilitator can then help a hurting person develop more self-awareness. Becoming emotionally vulnerable and honest in the presence of a horse allows healing to occur more naturally.
- Horses have an electromagnetic field projected by their heart that is 5 times greater than that of a human heart, which means it will influence a human heart rate. Studies have shown that as a result, the “coherent” heart rate pattern of a horse, which is able to recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently, will bring a human heart into its own coherent pattern. A coherent heart rate is a solid measure of well-being and is consistent with state of calm, which enables healing to take place.
- Studies have shown a significant decrease in cortisol (“stress hormones”) in individuals after completing equine-assisted learning activities.
- The horses’ arena can become a backdrop for everyday life, where those troubled by past trauma can actively participate in finding solutions to problems or situations with the horse, which develops skills in self-awareness, processing, and problem-solving. The goal is to get better, not just feel better.
- Interacting with a horse develops communication skills, self‐awareness, confidence building and self‐control, as well as experiencing unconditional love and care between the client and the horse…all areas of development that can be crippled by trauma.
